چکیده

9 This work presents real time implementation algorithms of simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) with emphasis to outdoor land vehicle applications in large environments. It presents the problematic of outdoors navigation in areas with combination of feature and featureless regions. The aspect of feature detection and validation is investigated to reliably detect the predominant features in the environment. Aided SLAM algorithms are presented that incorporate absolute information in a consistent manner. The SLAM implementation uses the compressed filter algorithm to maintain the map with a cost proportional to number of landmarks in the local area. The information gathered in the local area requires a full SLAM update when the vehicle leaves the local area. Algorithms to reduce the full update computational cost are also presented. Finally, experimental results obtained with a standard vehicle running in unstructured outdoor environment are presented. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. 10

Information Sampling for vision-based robot navigation

This paper proposes a statistical, non-feature based, attention mechanism for a mobile robot, termed Information Sampling. The selected data may be a single pixel or a number scattered throughout an image. After ranking this data, we choose only the most discriminating to build a topological representation of the environment, obtained via Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Advantageously, usin...

Adaptive servo visual robot control

Adaptive controllers for robot positioning and tracking using direct visual feedback with camera-in-hand configuration are proposed in this paper. The controllers are designed to compensate for full robot dynamics. Adaptation is introduced to reduce the design sensitivity due to robot and payload dynamics uncertainties. It is proved that the control system achieves the motion control objective ...

An ethological and emotional basis for human-robot interaction

This paper presents the role of ethological and emotional models as the basis for an architecture in support of entertainment robotic systems. Specific examples for Sony’s AIBO are presented as well as extensions related to a new humanoid robot, SDR.

Biomimetic walking robot SCORPION: Control and modeling

We present the biomimetic control scheme for the walking robot SCORPION. We used a concept of Basic Motion Patterns, which can be combined in a very flexible manner. In addition our modeling and simulation approach is described, which has been done based on the ADAMS(TM) simulator. Especially the motion patterns of real scorpions were analyzed and used for walking patterns and acceleration of t...

Toward sociable robots

This paper explores the topic of social robots—the class of robots that people anthropomorphize in order to interact with them. From the diverse and growing number of applications for such robots, a few distinct modes of interaction are beginning to emerge. We distinguish four such classes: socially evocative, social interface, socially receptive, and sociable. For the remainder of the paper, w...
